Last Defense is a real-time, app-driven, cooperative crisis management game from the team at Prospero Hall published by Funko Games.
The game contains everything you see in board games; cards, tokens, dice, a board, standees, and even miniatures!
It contains:
1 Game Board
2 dice
32 tool cards
5 threat movers
5 threat tiles
6 character cards
6 character figures
13 rubble tokens
13 scientist tokens
Instruction booklet
In Last Defense, your city is under attack by Space Aliens, Junk Blob, Sentient Plants, Spider Robots and Giant Tentacles.
Each player will take control of one unlikely hero which could be the BBQ Dad, On-call Nurse, a Skateboarder, Construction Worker, a Soccer Champ, and even a Good Dog.
Each unlikely hero is exactly the same except for one; a Special Location. It is a location on the board highlighted by the player’s color. It enables them to move to that location even if a Threat is occupying it.
To start a game of Last Defense, you will need to download a free app. The app runs the game by giving instructions on where the threats are last spotted. The app also handles the timer for the game of 20 minutes
The turns in Last Defense are fairly simple. You take the 2 dice and roll it. Take Tool cards from the deck equal to the value of the white die. Then, you may move your hero up to the value displayed on the pink die. At the end of your movement, flip any Rubble token on your space and you may discard cards that match the icons on the Rubble token to take the Scientist token below it.
To win the game, you must defeat all Threats. To defeat a Threat you need to have Scientist tokens at the Plaza that matches the icons on the Threat’s board.
The scientists in the game are Engineer, Meteorologist, Chemist, Biologist, and Astrophysicist – and each of the scientists is represented by different icons.
You lose the game when the timer runs out and at least 1 Threat remains on the board.
Final Thoughts
Game: Last Defense is a good example of a real-time pick-up-and-deliver game that is fun to play and has the right amount of interaction between players. The app manages the game very smoothly and the audio and music in the style of a newscast make the game ooze with theme.
Price: The game’s price will not burn your wallet nor put a hole in your pocket. I got this from Amazon US for around $20 or Php1000.
Components: The components are of Last Defense are of high quality, considering its price point. And varied that it almost seems like a manufacturer’s sampler kit because it contains different types of game components from miniatures to cardboard standees.
Solo: The game is soloable because of its cooperative nature, but it is a challenging experience even in its beginner difficulty. You will have to control 2 different characters under time pressure, and in my experience, there are times that I forgot which character’s turn it is, and I accidentally used a different hero’s tools during another hero’s turn. But give it some time and a true solo variant will appear in the board game geek forums.
If you’re a solo gamer and you like challenging yourself, then this is a real contender.
